Diploma in Coptic Studies
Since its establishment, the Coptic Studies Institute has undergone several stages of academic development, reflected in the evolution of its departmental structure. The organization of the departments has reflected the expanding scope of research and education at the Institute, as well as its commitment to developing a comprehensive study of Coptic civilization in its theological, linguistic, artistic, and social dimensions. The following overview illustrates the development of the Institute’s departments from their initial formation under the 1960 regulations, through the structural revisions of 1968, to the current structure as of November 2024.
Master’s Degree in Coptic Studies
After completing a preparatory academic year in the Master’s program, students at the Coptic Studies Institute are required to submit and defend a Master’s thesis as a fundamental graduation requirement. The thesis must present original research in the field of Coptic Studies and receive approval from a supervisory committee. It will generally include the publication of at least one research paper in a peer-reviewed journal. The degree is awarded upon successful defense of the thesis before an academic committee and fulfillment of all academic and publication requirements within the permitted timeframe.
PhD in Coptic Studies
PhD students at the Coptic Studies Institute are required to submit a doctoral dissertation based on original research in their chosen specialization, such as theology, history, heritage, arts, archaeology, social studies, and other related fields. Admission requires a Master’s degree in a relevant field and successful completion of any required pre-doctoral coursework. The dissertation must be successfully defended before an academic committee and will generally include requirements for scholarly publication or a contribution to the field. Upon completion, graduates are awarded a PhD degree.
