Diploma in Coptic Studies
Since its establishment, the Institute of Coptic Studies has gone through multiple stages of academic development, which has been reflected in the evolution of its departmental structure. The organization of the departments has mirrored the expansion of research and education at the Institute, as well as its commitment to advancing the comprehensive study of Coptic civilization across its theological, linguistic, artistic, and social dimensions. The following overview illustrates the evolution of the Institute’s departments from their initial formation in the 1960 regulations, through the structural revisions in 1968, leading up to its current structure as of November 2024.
Master's in Coptic Studies
After completing a preparatory academic year in the Master's program, students at the Institute of Coptic Studies are required to submit and defend a Master's thesis as a core graduation requirement. The thesis must include original research in the field of Coptic Studies, gain the approval of a supervisory committee, and typically involves publishing at least one research paper in a peer-reviewed journal. The degree is awarded upon the successful defense of the thesis before an academic committee and the fulfillment of all academic and publishing requirements within the permitted timeframe.
PhD in Coptic Studies
PhD students at the Institute of Coptic Studies must submit a doctoral dissertation based on original research in their chosen specialization, such as theology, history, heritage, arts, antiquities, social studies, and others. Admission requires holding a Master's degree in a relevant field and passing pre-doctoral courses, if applicable. The dissertation must be successfully defended before an academic committee, and often includes requirements for scientific publishing or contributions to the field. Upon completion, graduates are awarded a Doctorate (PhD) degree.
